Background

The Formartine Partnership is a non profit making organisation which was formed to promote sustainable community development across the Formartine area and the Ythan Valley .

One of the six administrative areas of Aberdeenshire, Formartine encompasses the 3 main settlements   and  surrounding areas of Ellon, Turriff and Oldmeldrum.

The Partnership  is the only ‘voluntary’ organisation that covers a wide range of community issues throughout the Formartine Area.

The Formartine Partnership has been supported with administration and project funding from  Aberdeenshire Council and the Scottish Executive Rural Challenge funding, which has allowed the  organisation to develop and implement a wide range of innovative community based initiatives.

The Formartine Partnership was formed in 1997, initially to address environmental issues concerning the River Ythan and its catchments, and the impact of these issues on local communities.

After consultation with/by Aberdeenshire Council, questionnaires were sent out to all of the Community councils and many Community Groups across Formartine, and results from these highlighted a perceived lack of ‘independent’ quality support and information provision for communities.

The Partnership was formed and a management team of 12 was elected to oversee the work of the group.  The Formartine Community Council Forum  was selected as the lead group of the Partnership, to ‘ensure and promote continuity of operation’

c          Improving communication between communities and other partners

d          Identifying, co-coordinating and promoting community and agency actions  which benefit the whole area

Provide a network to facilitate and support community group action in  Formartine by -

a          Developing close links between communities and agencies providing

            administrative support for partners

b          Enhancing access to relevant expertise

c          Identifying funding sources and increasing funding by pooling/matching

d          Helping to set up and support topic partnerships

Since its formation, the Partnership has attracted 27 member groups and organisations representing community, voluntary, environment, and business sectors across Formartine.

The main users of the Partnership are community groups who wish to enhance and/or develop aspects of their communities and local environment.

The Formartine Partnership also has a Tourism sub-group to address tourism issues in Formartine. The group comprises members with both tourism and community interests, and through the Formartine Partnership, is a member of Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board.

The Partnership has been successful in attracting grant funding for both its core activities and its project work with the communities across Formartine, from the Scottish Executive’s Rural Challenge Fund and Rural Community Transport Initiative, from Aberdeenshire Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Enterprise Grampian, Direct Grants, and from Shell Expro

The Partnership has more recently been tasked with delivering initiatives on behalf of other statutory and community bodies, including  Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership.
